First Snow

This was Sunday.  The first snow of the season.  Always a noteable event.   It gathered on the grass for a bit, then quietly melted.  It still is resoundingly Fall, with half the leaves on the trees and half off, so that you are surrounded by an orange glow as you walk through the woods.  And the smell!  The wonderful unique dusky dead leaf smell.  Dry.  Woody.  Earthy.  Swooshy.  Just makes you want to roll around onthe ground and bury yourself in a pile of leaves.

I wonder why no one has figured out how to record smell.  We can take photos of what we see, and recordings of what we hear, but there is no way to capture smell.  Mmmmmm.  Wouldn't that be wonderful?  What kind of smells would you record if you could?

  1. Deep question here. When they work that out, we'll be purchasing traces of places and people to keep around and remember with more nostalgia than ever.

  6. What a face! I think the smell I love the most is (I know this is going to sound crazy but...) damp dog. My damp dog. She has hair, not fur and she let's me bury my nose in her belly after she's plowed through the wet grass. Nothing better.

  7. Poplars in the spring and in the fall, rain, dogs, the scent of my daughter when she was a baby (closest thing I've found for the last one is beeswax candles).

  8. Hi Jennifer

it is funny but some of the most poignant smells that effect me are common things like cigarette smoke - at certain times it transports me back to my childhood and outings with my Dad.
Some of the smells I love are the forest floor, the eucalyptus leaves, gardenia, jasmin...wet concrete when it rains after a hot day...
    Happy days

  11. Liane and Deb - there are two of you who mentioned dogs. I guess it's the smell of the things we love. My dog has hair instead of fur, too, but I never thought about loving her smell, except for that warm popcorn smell of her paws. And just now my cat came in from outside and jumped in front of me on my desk, and her fur smells of the outside, mmmm.

  12. Hi Delwyn - another reminder of people we love can be wonderful for what it means. I can imagine how exquisite FRESH eucalyptus, jasmine and gardenia smell - we only get imported cuttings.

Something About Sunsets

There is something about sunsets that always makes me melancholy.  Dylan Thomas whispers in my ears.  "Do not go gentle into that goo...
